News of Wendell Mr. and Mrs.' Joe Palmer of Wil mington spent part of last week with Mrs. Palmer’s sister, Mrs. Jim Coley. Mrs. Jim Coley and son, Sonny, spent last Wednesday in Raleigh with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Young. Deborah Dean was confined to her home last week with measles. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Coley and Pam spent the past weekend in Ashe ville with Mrs. Coley’s parents. Dr. and Mrs. J. R. Hester will spend Sunday with his daughter, Mrs. John Ware, and Dr. Ware in Salis bury. Dr. and Mrs. Hester will con tinue to Asheville where Dr. Hester will attend the Medical Association Convention. Mrs. W. R. Nowell spent the weekend in Columbia with relatives. Willard Lee Kennedy underwent an appendectomy at Rex Hospital last Thursday. The children of Mr. and Mrs. J. Henderson Nowell celebrated Mrs. Nowell’s birthday at Parker’s at Wil son last Sunday. Attending from Wendell were Mrs. Lillie Belle Cagle and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Nowell. Mrs. Ollie Parrish of Richmond, Va., is a patient at St. Elizabeth Hos pital there. Mrs. Parrish is the form er Lucille Richardson of Wendell. Mrs. M. T. Roberts was a patient at Rex Hospital last week for diagnos tic treatment. She returned to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Wadford, in Raleigh Saturday. Mrs. Amos Dean fell at her home last Wednesday and broke her leg in two places between the knee and ankle. She returned home Saturday from Rex Hospital. rluttin Holder underwent surgery at Rex Hospital last Wednesday. Mrs. Robert Belivue had surgery for varicose veins at Rex Hospital last Wednesday. She is recuperating at her home in Wendell. Judge Crawford was discharged the past week from the Army. He and Mrs. Crawford (former Nan Bailey) will move to Raleigh this week where they both are employed. Luther Ledford, Jr., left Sunday for Clinton where he will be em ployed. Mrs. Ledford will again teach at E. M. I., Salemburg. Mr. and Mrs. Woodr< v Ferrell and son, Johnnie, and Mrs. Willis Strick land spent Sunday with their moth er, Mrs. Joe Ferrell. Mrs. Fred Ferguson of Canton spent part of last week with her mother, Mrs. Annie Alford, and her brother, the J. H. Alford family. Mr. and Mrs. Winton Anderson and two children, Susan and Fred, of W'aynesville visited her mother, Mrs. J. R. Williamson, and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Battle Robertson, and attended the funeral of Mrs. Phillip White. Mr. and Mrs. Waldo White of Wil mington attended Mr. White’s moth er’s funeral Sunday. Miss Mary Jo Hester spent the weekend in Richmond, Va., with her uncle, Robert Hester. Mrs. L. C. Ledford, Mrs. Claude Winebrener, Mrs. Oscar Griswold, Mrs. William Hester and Mrs. Mar guerite Price and two daughter at tended the Memorial Service for Ma jor Robert fl. Pearce, in Raleigh Sunday. Mrs. Hettie Mae Wilkins of Doug las, Ga., spent three days last week with her sister, Mrs. R. B. Critcher. Mrs. Wilkins was enroute to Norfolk, Va., to be with her sister, Mrs. Mack Humphlett, who underwent surgery on her hand Saturday. Mrs. Joe Ferrell, Mrs. Luther Led ford and Mrs. Louis Liles attended the funeral of Mr. Bunn Ferrell of Wilson Monday. Mr. Ferrell was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Ferrell. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Griffin and Mrs. Lee Mattox visited Mrs. Gladys Griffin at Woodard-Herring Hospital in Wilson where she has been con fined for a week with a virus. Jake Knott who has been in Paris, Tenn., has returned to Wendell and is with his parents. Mrs. Joris Bell is recuperating at her home after having a tumor re moved from her foot. Mrs. Paid Whitley is spending a week in Norfolk, Va., with her broth er and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Williams. Mrs. Louise Smith of Goldsboro spent the weekend with Miss Rachel Raybon. Mrs. Larry Green and baby Sherry of Fayetteville, spent the weekend with her aunt, Mrs. Ludie Yeargin. Mrs. D. O. Roberson of Greenville, S. C., is the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Brame. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Farmer of War renton were Monday guests of the W. A. Brames. Ivan Weathers received a hand in jury while at work Monday. It was dressed at Mary Elizabeth Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Brame attend ed the Griffin Family Reunion at Dortches in Nash County Sunday. Mrs. Brame had eight brothers and sisters present, ages ranging from 60 to 80 years. Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Griffin of Clearwater, Fla., were present. Mr. and Mrs. Davis Chamblee and children visited Mrs. Chamblee’s mother, Mrs. Bill Bryon, in Burling ton last weekend. Mrs. Bryon is a patient in the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Chamblee and Jerry and.Vicky visited Mrs. Cham blee’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Hammond, in Cerro Gordo. Herbert Whitley returned home Saturday from Mary Elizabeth Hos pital where he had been confined by injuries received on January 25 when he was hit by a car near his home on Selma Road. Mrs. Neil Chamblee was hostess to her Friday Night Bridge Club. The home was lovely with spring flowers. Members playing were Mrs. Thom as Jordan, Mrs. Walter Burgess, Mrs. Joe Henderson, Mrs. Alice Phillips, Mrs. Walter Dean, Jr., Mrs. Davis Chamblee and Mrs. Russell Richard son. Mrs. Chamblee won high score prize and Mrs. Richardson received second high. A delicious frozen salad was served during the social hour. Cokes and huts were served during progressions. • Mrs. Marvin Todd was hostess to the Missionary Society of the Metho dist Church. Mrs. Jake May presided and heard reports from the com mittees and treasurer’s report by Mrs. Jimmie Hobgood. Mrs. Calvin Rich ardson gave the devotional and Mrs. Tom Bailey gave the program. Thir teen members were present. Lime ice, mints, nuts and cake were served. • The Presbyterian Ladies’ Birthday Party was held in the home of Mrs. Margaret Todd on Wilson Avenue Monday night. Mrs. Ruth Croom pre sided and opened the meeting with prayer. Discussions and plans were made for meetings of the church. A three-tiered birthday cake and lime ice, nuts and mints were Served from a lovely table of pink center piece and pink candles. PEARCE A memorial service for Major Rob ert H. Pearce, Jr., 36, U. S. Marine Corps, was held Sunday at 4 p.m. from Hayes Barton Baptist Church. The Rev. Fred Cox, Jr., pastor of the Doraville Baptist Church, Doraville, Ga., officiated. He was assisted by Dr. John W. Kincheloe, Jr., of Hayes Barton Baptist Church and Dr. W. W. Leathers, Jr., pastor of the First Bap tist Church of Henderson. Burial will be at Arlington Nation al Cemetery, Arlington, Va., at a time to be announced. Major Pearce was killed in a heli copter crash in Kawasaka, Okinawa; and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert H. Pearce of 2217 Oxford Road, Raleigh. Mrs. T. H. Hester of Wendell was his grandmother. • MRS. PHILLIP A. WHITE Mrs. Phillip A. White, 86, died Fri day night at her home here. Due to the remodeling of the Meth odist church in Wendell, funeral serv ices were held at the Zebulon Metho dist Church, of which she was a char ter member, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Her pastor, the Rev. Harry Rogers, officiated, assisted by the Rev. W. K. Quick. Burial was in the Zebu Ion cemetery. Survivors are seven sons, Percy, Willard, Glenn, Wallace, and Halbert, all of Wendell, Durward L. of Caro lina Beach, and Waldo of Wilming ton; three sisters, Misses Oza and Doza Blackley of Wakefield, and Mrs. Allie Fuller of Richmond, Va.; 16 grandchildren, and 17 great grand children.
